Time Duration Calculator

Calculate time differences

How This Time Duration Calculator Works

Our free Time Duration Calculator finds the exact difference between any two times in hours, minutes, and seconds. It also displays total minutes, total seconds, and decimal hours - a format commonly used for timesheets, payroll, and billing. The "next day" option handles overnight time spans.

How Time Duration Is Calculated

Formula: Duration = End Time − Start Time

Decimal Hours: Total Minutes / 60

Example: Start time 9:15 AM, End time 5:45 PM = 8 hours, 30 minutes = 510 total minutes = 8.50 decimal hours.

Decimal hours express time as a decimal number instead of hours:minutes. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 decimal hours. This format simplifies payroll calculations, billing, and data entry. Our Hours Calculator also uses decimal hours for pay calculations.

Yes, check the "End time is next day" checkbox for overnight calculations. For example, a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM spans midnight - the calculator correctly computes 8 hours when this option is enabled.

Divide the minutes by 60. For example: 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes = 0.50 hours, 45 minutes = 0.75 hours. Our calculator does this automatically. For date-based calculations, use the Date Calculator.
