Hours Calculator

Calculate working hours and time

How This Hours Calculator Works

Our free Hours Calculator computes your total working hours, regular hours, overtime hours, and pay from your clock-in and clock-out times. It subtracts break time and calculates regular and overtime pay based on your hourly rate and overtime multiplier.

This tool is ideal for employees tracking daily hours for timesheets, freelancers billing clients, and managers calculating payroll. It handles overnight shifts automatically and supports customizable regular hour thresholds and overtime rates.

How Work Hours & Pay Are Calculated

Total Hours = (Clock Out − Clock In) − Break Time

Regular Pay = min(Total Hours, Regular Hrs Threshold) × Hourly Rate

Overtime Pay = max(0, Total Hours − Regular Hrs) × Hourly Rate × OT Multiplier

Example: Clock in 8:00 AM, clock out 6:30 PM, 30-minute break, $25/hr, 8-hour threshold, 1.5x overtime:

Total Hours Worked10 hours (10.5 hrs minus 0.5 hr break)
Regular Hours8.00 hours × $25 = $200.00
Overtime Hours2.00 hours × $25 × 1.5 = $75.00
Total Pay$275.00

In the US, federal law requires 1.5x pay for hours over 40 per week (time-and-a-half). Some states and contracts may require double-time (2.0x) for holidays or excessive overtime. The default 1.5x is the most common rate, but you can change it to match your specific employment terms.

Yes, if your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time (e.g., in at 10 PM, out at 6 AM), the calculator assumes the shift spans midnight and correctly calculates the hours. For more basic time calculations, try our Time Duration Calculator.

The calculator displays total hours in decimal format (e.g., 8.50 instead of 8 hours 30 minutes). This is the standard format used in most timesheet and payroll systems. Simply enter your times and the decimal value is ready to enter into your timesheet.
